The SF debut of London's SPORTS TEAM!

BIOGRAPHY:

Sports Team are a six piece British band who formed at Cambridge University and are currently residing in West London’s Harlesden. Fronted by motor-mouth madman Alex Rice, the six-piece exhibit the kind of humour and energy too often missing from modern indie. From a long-running fake ‘beef’ with the South London scene, to a newfound obsession with calling their fanbase ‘The Sporkles’, Sports Team’s fun-first approach is a breath of fresh air.

Completed by guitarist and songwriter Rob Knaggs, drummer Al Greenwood, guitarist Henry Young, bassist Oli Dewdney and multi-instrumentalist Ben Mack, it’s in the live arena that Sports Team really come alive. Up front, there’s Rice’s dancing – a cross between Jagger, Curtis and your weird uncle on the dance-mat after three Red Bulls. But peer past his limb-y expressions and you’ll find Young shredding without a pick, and Dewdney’s beaming grin and shock of bleached hair lighting up the back of the room. Mack meanwhile, spends every gig half-heartedly prodding at a keyboard, shaking a box of Tic-Tacs and refusing to crack a single smile. And word is spreading. So much so that the band recently sold out their largest London show to date, at the 1400 capacity Electric Ballroom.

Recent singles M5 and Margate – an ode to the idiosyncrasies of a British summertime – encapsulate Sports Team’s spirited approach, while breakthrough single Kutcher (itself a love letter to “mid-noughties MTV star” Ashton Kutcher) and live favourite Stanton (which finds Rice belting out his adoration for “a flip-screen Motorola”), are proof that beyond the wacky antics, there’s a heart of pure indie-pop gold in everything Sports Team do.

Talking about their influences, Rice says “I think it’s sort of English. It’s an English place – [poet] John Betjeman is a big influence. Lyrically it’s about valorising what’s around you, rather than sending it down in a way. It’s about romanticising a roundabout.”

Sports Team released their EP last year. It was widely applauded by UK media. Radio One’s respected evening radio host Annie Mac said: “Sports Team should be your favourite band”, while Dummy magazine said the band “captured our hearts with compelling and rebellious live shows.” Meanwhile Noisey declared: “Sports Team are the best indie-rock band in London, and Camel Crew, the standout from their January EP Winter Nets, is the best British track of the year of so far.”

In March 2018, the band completed their first UK tour, which culminated in a sold out show at The Moth Club in London. That night, the band signed a long term recording deal with Island Records for both the band and their label Holm Front Records.

The deal led them to a meeting with Canadian / Australian record producer Burke Reid. Reid is one of Australia’s most respected record producers, recently winning ARIA Recording Engineer of the year award - the equivalent of a Grammy in his home country. His credits include two albums for internationally renowned artist Courtney Barnett, who was herself nominated for a Grammy Award in the US in 2016. Reid has since produced two singles for Sports Team, Kutcher, and Margate, both of which have gone some way to elevating the band’s stature. Kutcher was named Hottest Record In The World on Radio One, and later picked up the record of the week position on the same radio station.

Over the summer of 2018 Sports Team played numerous festivals across the UK and Europe. Highlights included headlining the BBC Introducing stage at Reading and Leeds, a prime slot for a new band that is aired nationally on the BBC (equivalent of ABC). As the summer drew to a close the band announced their biggest headline show to date: the one thousand capacity Scala in London. Despite only releasing their debut record some 8 months, the band sold it out, leading to a rousing review in national newspaper The Guardian, which declared: “The impressive six-piece bring middle England’s romance and ennui to life, and are a reminder of why guitar bands work.” The date was followed by a national tour with The Magic Gang, and later Spain’s Hinds.

Summer 2019 will see them performing on the stages of some of the biggest festivals across the UK and Europe, including main stage performances at Rock Werchter in Belgium, alongside Glastonbury Festival, Reading and Leeds, and Waldstock in Germany.

Their debut album will be released in 2019.
