Spirit & Scribe explores the intersection of writing craft and spiritual formation from a Christian perspective.

About this event

UPDATE: The August 2022 cohort is sold out. To be notified the next time we offer Spirit & Scribe, sign up for the interest list.

Spirit & Scribe explores the intersection of writing craft and spiritual formation. While there are many books and courses about spiritual practices, and about writing, this course will meet on the bridge between the two — exploring how our spiritual lives shape our art, and how our writing forms us (and others) spiritually.

We limit each Spirit & Scribe cohort to about 20 people to facilitate an intimate community where participants can get to know each other and learn from one another. Each week participants will be led through corporate prayer, an interactive lesson, reflection exercises, and group discussion. Participants will also have the opportunity to engage in mid-week exercises designed to fuse their artistic practices with their spiritual callings. Our hope is that every person would leave with a clearer sense of how to journey with God as a writer, and hopefully some new friends for the journey.

The weekly hour-and-a-half sessions will meet on Monday evenings from 6:00-7:30 pm (Pacific Time).

Week 1, August 8: Purpose — Motivations in Writing

  • What motivates our writing? What should motivate us? Should we create if our motives aren't 100% pure? Is that even possible? In this first week, we will get real about our motivations as writers and consider how God is inviting us to journey with Him.

Week 2, August 15: Process — Cultivating an Idea

  • What does it look like to shepherd an idea from concept to publication? In our second week, we will explore what Scripture teaches us about how to cultivate an idea and how to know which ideas are worth pursuing.

Week 3, August 22: Prayer — Writing with the Spirit

  • How does prayer intersect with our writing lives? We will look at how God gives creative ideas through prayer, how prayer shapes those ideas, how art can be a form of prayer, and how our art can be a form of obedience to God. We will also explore how prayerlessness impacts our writing.

Week 4, August 29: Parable — Forming the Imagination

  • In our final week, we will turn from looking at our own spirituality to consider how our writing craft intersects with our readers' spiritual formation. Jesus gave the masterclass in this, but what does it look like for us today? Is imagination opposed to truth, or can they dance together?

This workshop is open to writers of all levels and genres: professional and aspiring writers (essayists, novelists, poets, playwrights, songwriters, etc.). We have had the joy of walking alongside over 80 writers from five different countries. Here is what participants from previous cohorts have said:

  • "Chante and Michael have crafted an absolute gem of a course that has inspired me to write more, to tend to the creative seeds that God has given me, and to view prayer as an integral part of the creative process. More than that, they have given me new vision for what a faith community can look like. I appreciated their faithfulness, insights, and ability to facilitate such vulnerable and deep times of sharing our confessions and craft." - Kristin Huang

  • "Spirit and Scribe was the workshop I’ve been looking for but never knew it. Chante and Michael have thoughtfully created a place for writers to consider together what it means to create alongside Christ. Thanks to their humble and compassionate teaching and the community they cultivated, I feel more rooted in my purpose as a writer." - Bethany Colas

  • "Spirit & Scribe offered me the community I was seeking! I was at a point where I had grown lethargic and inconsistent in my writing and needed refreshing. The time spent in fellowship with other writers and creatives was an experience I will always treasure." -Joylanda Jamison

  • "If you feel like you're traveling alone in the dark as a Christian artist, Spirit and Scribe is a place to gather with other souls around a virtual campfire to mull over writing. It's a place to be reminded of how Jesus started story and art within our hearts. I came out of this seminar aware and connected to 20 more people who are living, working, writing, and dreaming for God." - Ylan Chung
