Event Details

Spinning is deeply rooted in history and a feature of fairy tales; it is still a popular skill. Come along and learn from our expert teacher. Forget the arduous activity that groups of people sometimes do on exercise bikes in gyms; spinning is both more relaxed and creative (and possibly just as good for you)! This is a friendly class for beginners and students with some experience who want to develop their skills further.

This course is at the Greenwich Campus SE10 on Thursdays

What will I learn?

Learn to use a drop spindle and a spinning wheel to create your own unique yarns for weaving, knitting and other crafts. Find out about fibre preparation, explore the qualities of different fibre types, share ideas and be inspired.

What are the entry requirements?

Enthusiasm -- no previous experience needed.

Is this the right course for me?

This course is suitable for anyone interested in learning new skills, and who has an interest in textiles.

What can I do after this course?

Our learners go on to use their skills in their lives in many different ways; some go on to sell their work and develop a small business. Others use their skills to find work or to go up the career ladder. You may go on to:

  • Further study of textiles, including weaving, spinning, depending on what you want to do with the yarn you produce
  • Entry to higher education
  • Share your skills developed here with community education groups e.g. Woodlands Farm, knitting circles, craft fair demonstrations
  • Set up small craft businesses
  • Set up an online shop selling crafts for charity

What else do I need to know?

We have plenty of materials available for beginners to get started. However, if you have specific requirements for advanced spinning (e.g. cashmere/silk blends) you will need to provide your own fibres, though we can advise as to good suppliers. If you are allergic to wool we have many alternatives available.

This popular course for more advanced learners runs on Thursdays and lasts for 5 weeks.

I’ve booked! How do I enrol for the course?

You will need to complete an enrolment form in person or by email. You must enrol, in full, before you start your course.
