Sphere: The Thelonious Monk Storyis an exciting theatrical experience for jazz lovers and for everyone else!! Sphere is a unique exploration of 20th century racial politics, mental illness, and the nature of genius – in a fascinating portrait of one of America ’s greatest true-to-life artistic figures. The title character, Thelonious Sphere Monk, engages in a sometimes-abstract conversation with his psychiatrist, as they both try to make sense of his life and music. Follow the story of one man’s struggles to make his art and to make a living, from 1930s Harlem to 1950s Greenwich Village and beyond. See how he deals with drug abuse, mental challenges, and racism; and how he creates a great musical legacy in their wake.
Sphere: The Thelonious Monk Storyby Max Garner – directed by Rosiland Cauthen – appears in the DC Black Theatre Festival following a successful three-week run at Arena Players (the oldest continuously operating black theater in the U.S. ) in March, and a workshop production at the LOFT in 2011.
Performances will be at The Woolly Mammoth Theatre, at 1:00pm and 5:00pm on Saturday, June 30th, and at 3:00pm on Sunday, July 1st.
