Event description

Approximately 70-90% of individuals with Parkinson’s disease experience a PD-related voice and speech disorder, which have been shown to affect overall quality of life ratings.

The LSVT®-LOUD (Lee Silverman Voice Treatment) and SPEAK OUT!® are speech therapy interventions shown to benefit PD-related voice impairments. However, cognitive and psychomotor dysfunction may also contribute to speech disorders, and for this reason, some patients may fail to carryover therapy techniques to every day conversation or fail to maintain the improvements made in speech beyond formal therapy.

After-therapy programs, community based programs like The LOUD Crowd® , device interventions, and guided programs such as Voice Aerobics® may offer Parkinson’s patients an adjunct to formal speech therapy.

Ms. Spremulli, a speech-language pathologist with over 25 years experience working with individuals with Parkinson’s will discuss the various programs and interventions currently available to help patients improve and preserve communication abilities.
