Event description

Description

Speculative Utopias: Cities from the 1920s to the present
Date: 18 June 2018
Time: 6.30-8.30pm
Venue: Future Cities Catapult, 1 Sekforde Street, EC1R 0BE London

Since the early 20th century, utopian ideas about the way architecture and urban planning might radically change society have been integral to the discipline. Even though the past has shown the limits of architectural utopia, with its desire to shape subjectivities and systematise behaviour, such projects have proposed new ways of conceptualising architecture and reshaped the way architects approach their practice. This talk examines the legacy of utopian thinking to map their value for contemporary architecture. From radical cities of the past to current projects at the intersection of digital and material, this talk will aim to trace the power of utopia to chart new avenues of research and engage in thinking about tomorrow.
