WHY TAKE THIS COURSE

The types of challenges facing today’s business will need to take new approaches to find success now and in the future. Design thinking and human centered design have proven to be a revolution in business thinking and approaches to problem solving. Speculative design represents the continued evolution of thinking in this space, with new approaches powerfully address the complex needs of businesses today.

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN

This course will give you a practical understanding of the emerging theory and approach of speculative design, and give you real mechanisms to apply this thinking in your work and create impact. You’ll learn about emergent signals and scanning, future scenario building, speculative & critical design, future prototyping, implication pie, backcasting, closing the loop, future cones, A/B, and more.

WHO IS IT FOR

This Speculative Design Introduction workshop is geared for any professional looking to create new meaningful impact within their organization or industry. You are familiar with design thinking & Human Centred Design and are interested in emerging design methods. You are a professional designer (UX/UI, Product Design, Service Design, etc.) looking to see how speculative design can augment your practice. You are a researcher or strategist seeking to augment methods for insight, future planning and strategy generation. You are a business professional seeking new ways of thinking about the problems and opportunities facing your business. Our lectures and workshops are generally created for exceptional junior, and mid to senior level professionals looking to explore what is next in their practice.

Day 1 can be a stand alone experience where you’ll get up to speed on the latest speculative design practice, explore its value as a research tool in organizational design settings and for the development of strategy & new product concepts, and participate in an exercise to experience the workings of these approaches.

Day 2 offers the space to dig deeper and work on applying the principles and approaches from day 1 on some team briefs and reflect on how these apporaches may have impact in your work. If you wish to attend day 2 alone we suggest you have a good working knowledge of the core principles of speculative design.
