"Wizards of music!

Sat, Sun 17-18. Oct. 2009
Spectrum XXI International Festival, Fourth Edition
To attend a performance involving Iancu Dumitrescu and Ana Maria
Avram is a real privilege and an intimate experience. Usually the interaction
between conductor and ensemble is prim and proper, there is an
expected form of behaviour and it is followed. However, I always feel
when seeing Iancu Dumitrescu and Ana Maria Avram in action with the
artists breathing life into their pieces that there is a lot more, you see all
parties suffer to bring the audience beautiful music. There is nothing
staged or papered over. Emotions run free. In conducting Dumitrescu
and Avram have a unique style. I am reminded much less of a classi cal conductor and more of a couple of wizards conjuring up controlled
explosions of fiery sound from the members of the orchestra. We were
treated to a dazzling display interaction between wizards, performers
and electronics which alternately threatened to bring about the apocalypse
or sooth us gently. It would be hard to choose any single piece as
being the ‘best’. However, Bolids and Contemplations (Epsilon)
for three percussion players stood out for the sheer technical mastery of
the performers in an incredibly demanding piece where strict discipline
and lightening reactions were essential. The sense of movement and the
overwhelming barrage of sound which contrasted with moments of almost
quite contemplation left me buzzing. The evening has to be one of
the most memorable musical performances of 2009, I really regret not
having made it to any of the other concerts in the series. Hopefully the
wizards will be back again next year to work their magic!
