Special Topics in Photography


Elements of Photographic Design

Mondays, October 23 and 30

Learn how to make an impact with your photographs, using principles of composition and art. Students will explore photographic elements such as line, space, texture, pattern, color, depth of field, framing, light/shadow, and perspective. Beginners and experts alike will benefit from this course. Bring your chosen picture-taking devices (phones included) to each class.


Setting the Mood

Photographs can vary in mood and in the emotions they evoke from the viewer. Feelings such as happiness and melancholy can be created using various photographic tools and techniques. Learn how to use the camera to convey a desired mood in your photographs. Both novices and experts are welcome. Bring your chosen picture-taking device to each class.


Confirmation: After registering, you will receive an e-mail containing all course details, including the classroom location and any special instructions.

Parking: Ample parking is available outside the Elberson Fine Arts Center, and limited parking is available around Salem Square and the Old Salem Visitor’s Center. Please observe posted parking regulations. Call Public Safety for assistance at (336) 917-5555.

Inclement Weather: If the institution cancels or delays classes because of inclement weather, local television stations will be asked to make the announcement. In particular, monitor WXII and FOX-WGHP. Cancellations and delays will also be posted at www.salem.edu and on the switchboard voicemail service at (336) 721-2600.

Withdrawals and Refunds: Please note that anyone who withdraws from a course will receive a full refund (minus a $30.00 processing fee, per course) if the Courses for Community office is notified in writing at least three business days prior to the start of the course. No refund is given after that time unless the college must cancel the course, in which case a full refund is issued.

Continuing Education Units: CEUs are awarded, based on participation in courses, at one unit per ten hours of attendance. CEUs must be requested when registering. Not all courses carry CEUs. Please notify the Courses for Community office if you need verification documents.

Bookstore: If a book is required for the course, it will be listed in your registration confirmation. You may find it at your favorite bookstore. Order early to make certain you have it for the first class.
