Event description
Special Scientific Meeting

About this event

This Special Scientific Meeting is being planned to honor Mirta Berman-Oelsner and Robert Oelsner, who are relocating from Seattle later this year. This meeting is only open to NPSI full members and analysts-in-training.

Description and Learning Objectives for Mirta Berman-Oelsner’s Presentation:“Becoming an analyst: Some essentials.”Becoming an analyst takes time, dedication, scientific rigor and ethical responsibility, just to mention some of the basic requirements. Each analyst needs to find his /her own identity and her/his own voice. Psychoanalytic practice is a blend of theories, technique and creativity. Analytic work can be challenging because of the intensity of emotions present in the analytic relationship. Likewise, it is challenging to become an analyst. Becoming and being a psychoanalyst is not straight-forward.

Description and Learning Objectives for Robert Oelsner’s presentation:“The Hunger Artist - A clinical report”In this brief contribution, the author brings his preoccupation with the relentlessness of the death instinct which may manifest itself in different guises, from widespread destructiveness, wars, shootings, climate change, to a mute sliding back into the inanimate in the other extreme. A clinical report is aimed at describing the manifestation of the death instinct in a patient in analysis. Kafka’s tale “The Hunger Artist,” is a literary depiction of the work of the death instinct.
