BASIC SAFE CHURCH TRAINING is designed for ordained and lay ministers who have not yet attended a safe church training in the Episcopal Church in Connecticut. This special one-day event on October 17 is open to anyone, even those not required to take Safe Church Training.

Check-in starts at 8:30 a.m. and the program begins at 9 a.m. with prayers and then an opening presentation by Bishop Ian Douglas and Canon Robin Hammeal-Urban, "Power, Privilege, and Our Baptismal Covenant.

Participants will then have then have the opportunity to go deeper into one of four specialized topics and ask questions of experts who are not typically present at other trainings. Those topics are Social meda, Elder treatment, LGBTQ, and Welcoming differently-abled.

For the Afternoon Session, a more traditional Safe Church training will be offered (see overview below), however at this Oct. 17 session, participants can choose a track that focuses more on adults and elders, or one that focuses more on children and youth.

Additional notes about Oct. 17:

  •     All participants will receive a certificate of Safe Church training.
  •     Tours of our Camp and Conference Center will be available.
  •     Advance registration is required.
  •     There is no fee for this day. Lunch is included, prepared by the chef for our group..

Registration ends at 9:00 pm on October 12, 2015 or when the training is full, whichever comes first. Check in the day of the event is between 8:30 and 8:55 a.m. The training begins promptly at 9:00 a.m.

This training may be eligible for continuing education credit at your place of employment. Check with your employer before attending the training session.


"Traditional" Safe Church Training includes:

  • Prevention, identification and response to elder abuse
  • Prevention, identification and response to sexual abuse of children and youth
  • The newly revised Diocesan Policy for the Protection of Children and Youth
  • Power and Boundaries in the ministerial relationship with adults
  • The Diocesan response to misconduct within a community of faith
  • Sexual Harassment
  • Guidelines for Ordained Ministry (many of which apply to lay ministry)
