Basketball is one of the top sports at Special Olympics. Players take it up at all ages and at all abilities, from young players learning to handle the ball and keep it under control while dribbling to older, more experienced players who have the moves and know the strategies to play challenging ball.
We have multiple volunteer opportuntites for our Regional Basketball Tournament. The event will be held at Campus High School (CHS), Haysville Middle School (HMS), Haysville Middle School West (HMS West) and Ruth Clark Elementary.
All volunteers will be given a Special Olympics Kansas T-Shirt & Lunch. The following volunteer duties are available:
Scorekeeping (@ CHS, HMS, HMS West): You would be responsible for keeping score and time for each game.
Referee - Be knowledgeable of all officiating rules and playing guidelines for their assigned level(s). Make fair and consistent calls. Be respectful and professional to participants and fellow staff. Pay attention to game at all times. Inform scorekeepers of points scored and fouls incurred throughout the game. Prior knowledge of the game of basketball (playing or watching) is expected.
Individual & Team Skills: You would be responsible for helping the athletes go through the individual and team skills. These are designed specifically for athletes with lower abilities that are not yet proficient in the basic fundamental skills required to safely and meaningfully participate in team Basketball. They should be conducted with the same professional manner and with the same excitement as team competition. Individual skills consists of three events: Spot Shot, Ten-Meter Dribble, and Target Pass. The set-up and rules for these will be explained as we get closer to the event.
