Description

In Real Estate the mantra is Location, Location, Location. When it comes to managing your global operations the mantra is Different, Different, Different; as in everything is different based on the countries in which you are operating and the regulatory changes that seem to happen every day. During this Entrepreneur’s lunch, let’s embrace these differences together. That way you will avoid stealing the dream of your overseas employees.

This business focused session will enable you to plan approriate company structures so expediting overseas corporate tax and budgeting processes. Conversations with clients are often around eliminating surprises as they cost money. Knows what questions to ask and how to avoid making assumptions that might overly increase risk. So although domestic business rarely passes off without incident, overseas expansion definitely throws up more surprises.

Mike Butler will share some indicators that the time is right to expand overseas as well as detailed information that will help you anticipate and prepare for the complexities of global Management. It will look at the broader business requirements around employment entities, tax frameworks that impact the talent pool, employment brand, speed of hire and ability to offer benefits.

Learn from Mike’s own battlescars of operating internationally and find out the relevance of the famous quote ‘Follow the Money’ to global HR. Oh and by the way ‘Don’t assume you have a talent pool on your doorstep when you head overseas.

This session will be useful for anyone who has previously worked overseas or who has aspirations to work internationally at some stage with their company in the future. Even those who have never considered moving overseas will get some inspiration. Domestic markets have been strong for most of the last 20 years but emerging market may now be stronger so where do you focus your domestic resource. Whether attendees work for a small international company or a large transnational, overseas expansion requires knowledge outside the realm of domestic expansion. For example those who budget domestically will learn about the hidden costs of overseas expansion. For example 60% of overseas expansion costs are HR related. But really this will be a fun session for any attendee who is interested in life beyond US Borders.

Mike Butler has more than 20 years’ experience working in the UK, France and US as a European HR executive and consultant working with such companies as United Airlines and Jones Lang Lasalle. He remembers thinking how glamourous his first International HR job seemed at the time but a few months later he wished he had read the small print. With plenty of battlescars, if you enjoy learning from other’s mistakes, you’re in the right place. Mike is definitely qualified to enter the debate and offer an interesting perspective. Combine that with his British sense of humor and it makes for a fun session. Hopefully at least you will understand his accent but either way if you work globally; there are lots of accents to understand so it will be good practice.

Mike currently advises US companies setting up remote Sales / IT teams outside the US on all aspects of international expansion and HR Compliance. Mike has the CIPD (UK), GPHR (US) and SHRM – SCP (US) HR qualifications as well an MBA. He currently sits on SHRM’s global expertise panel and has previously written exam questions for Global HR certifications.

Mike’s mantra is ‘Don’t steal the dream of your overseas employees’ by not understanding how different things are in other frameworks.
