Invite you to attend a series of workshops developed to help you navigate the Special Education Process

Workshop #1: Engaging in the Special Education Process in K-12 Public Education System

Date: Saturday, January 20, 2018  8:30 am–12:00 pm

Parents, caregivers, guardians, and students play an integral role in the special education process. The purpose of this workshop is to provide a historical context of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), an overview of the initial steps of the special education process from warning signs in the home and/or classroom to assessment, referral, and IEP review. Participants will gain knowledge about how to participate effectively in the annual IEP meeting and how to best address IEP–based concerns.

A list of local resources available to families of children with learning difficulties will also be provided to workshop participants.

Workshop #2: Early intervention Services - Transitioning to the District

Date: Monday, February 12, 2018  5:30–8:00 pm

This workshop is designed to provide parents, caregivers, and guardians with an overview of Early Intervention services for at-risk or delayed children ages 0-3, the transition process into district services, and an overview of basic rights for CA students and their families. Resources and tools available to students and families outside of and within the IEP or 504 plan processes will be provided by the district and county’s SELPA.

Workshop presenters include:

Workshop #3: Your Right to Special Education Services in K-12 Education

Date: Tuesday, March 13, 2018  5:30–8:00 pm

Parents, caregivers, guardians, and students play an integral role in the special education process, along with educators and administrators. The purpose of this workshop is to provide an overview of special education in the State of California. The CA Office of Administrative Hearings (OAH) Presiding Judge Hon. Margaret Gibson will present on the OAH, navigating Mediation, and Special Education Due Process.

Workshop presenters include:

Workshop #4: Transitioning from School District Services

Date: Tuesday, April 17, 2018  5:30–8:00 pm

This workshop is designed to assist parents and students in the transition from high school and school district services to adult life. We will provide tools and resources to help students become their own advocates as they reach maturity. Information on Person-Centered Planning within Transition Planning, and how students and families can navigate resources available through general education and special education in high school and college will be provided. All students and their support team members are encouraged to attend.
