The Speaking Circles approach is designed to dissolve speaking anxiety in a more gentle and easeful way. The method was created over 25 years ago by Lee Glickstein. What he discovered in helping ease fears with speaking, is to focus on listening more than speaking. A foundational part of the work is called Relational Presence. It is a practice of naturally being with one person at a time with your eyes while you speak. I teach the mode of Relational Presence in the beginning of each class and encourage its use during the whole time the participants are in the room. As the class progresses there is a listening field that stays in the room. It’s called “Luminious Listening.” He states that it brings out the best in everyone including yourself. With this method, the audience is ready to support you with no judgment and kind regard. What materializes in the person talking is a surrender to the support which naturally stills the mind which allows words to effortlessly be in sync with thoughts.
My classes are designed for a maximum of 10 people. Small class sizes create a sense of safety and ample time to engage in warm up exercises, practice turns and conversations. One of the stand out parts to my program is content is not required. It’s about being in tune with yourself and your audience without being attached to agenda, content or style. “Halfway through the talk, there was an absolute living bond between myself and the audience, as if there was no speaker and no listener and the words were simply created at the unknown frontier between listening and speaking. I knew this was the edge at which I wanted to live.” - Poet David Whyte
