Event Details

Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer is pleased to invite you to attend Speak Up NY, an invitation-only "unconference" in New York on Friday, June 11th to discuss building an online platform for New Yorkers to better communicate with their government and with each other.

We are evaluating the potential to roll out what would be the first government-sponsored online community site, with features such as citizen blogging, discussion forums, wikis, and interest group pages. Before going forward with such a site, we're using this unconference to bring together a group of community activists, technology leaders, and experts in online communities to discuss what it will take to deploy a vibrant, engaging online community.

Specific topics of discussion will include:

  • Success stories and models
  • Failure stories and risks
  • Existing web-based platforms and tools
  • Possible features (wiki, blogs, forum, etc.) and when/why to use each
  • The role of online "community management" in building vibrant communities
  • Legal Considerations
  • And more

You can see day's agenda and the evolving list of discussion topics here:

http://etherplans.org/SpeakUpNY

An unconference is a facilitated, participant-driven workshop where attendees engage with each other to share their expertise.  For those of you unfamiliar with the unconference format, here's how it works:

Everyone attending Friday's event will be a participant, not an observer.  Whereas at a traditional conference the idea is to listen to experts, at an unconference the participants are the experts.  So, making this event a success will rely on your willingness to engage in lively discussion, bring your ideas to the table, and connect with the other participants.

The exact topics for the breakout sessions will be finalized on the day of the event, and will come from the suggestions posted to the web page linked above.  We've seeded the list with some topics that we're particularly interested in, but we ask that you please add your own ideas. Keep an eye on that page as it will be constantly updated as we approach the event.

The event will last from 10 am to 4 pm on Friday, June 11th and is being hosted at OpenPlans's event space in the penthouse of 148 Lafayette St. in SoHo.

For more information, please contact Shaan Khan, Director of Community Affairs and Constituent Services, at SKhan@manhattanbp.org.

Thanks!
