Description

Your heart races. Your stomach turns. And, you start to sweat. You feel as though you’re facing a life or death situation, but in reality, you’re preparing to speak in front of people.

If this describes your reaction to public speaking, there is some good news. First, you are not alone, and second, there are several techniques for managing your anxiety.

Start to understand the science behind speech anxiety, get an opportunity to share your own fears, and be introduced to several techniques for managing your nerves whenever you are asked to speak.

____

Presenter: Misti Yang

As a high schooler, Misti Yang’s mind blanked while delivering a speech in the state finals of the American Legion Oratorical Contest, so she knows how nerves can impact a speaker, but she also knows that you will survive any and every speaking occasion. As the community and marketing director for Yelp in Las Vegas, she represented the online review site on television and at conferences.

Today, Misti is a doctoral student in the Department of Communication in the area of rhetoric and political culture. She is currently an instructor for COMM 107 - Oral Communication: Principles and Practices. She earned her B.A. in American Studies with a minor in Education from Wellesley College and her M.A. in Communication at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, where she also taught public speaking.
