Discussion Topics:

Water loading in horizontal wells is a much more difficult problem to address than in vertical wells because of the well trajectory and difficulty in effectively de-watering the lateral. Water loading in horizontal wells is one of the major causes of loss of production and reserves and damage to fracture effectiveness. The cause and severity of the damage are more complex than simply increased bottomhole flowing pressure and is based on fundamental porous media flow physics. This talk will discuss why water loading damages production and methods to reduce the damage.

Biography:

Dr. Robert D. Barree (PE, Colorado; B.S. Petroleum Engineering from Penn State; Ph.D. Petroleum Engineering from Colorado School of Mines) is a Halliburton Technology Fellow (Production Enhancement) specializing in hydraulic fracture design and simulation with more than 40 years of experience in the industry, and more than 75 technical publications. He was president of Barree & Associates consulting firm from 2000 to 2018. He was a Senior Technical Consultant at Marathon's Petroleum Technology Center until 2000, specializing in advanced core analysis and integration with petrophysics and numerical simulation. He is the developer of fracture diagnostic procedures (DFITs) and is the primary author of the fully three-dimensional hydraulic fracture simulator GOHFER. The SPE/AIME awarded Dr. Barree the Anthony F. Lucas Gold Medal in 2018 and appointed him SPE Distinguished Member.
