Event Details

Our Pub(lications) Crawl is an annual day-long event where you'll get to tour the offices of two fantastic magazines for an in-depth look at the way things really work. This year we're visiting Men's Health, The Huffington Post, Bloomberg BusinessWeek, Inked, People en Español and Seventeen magazines, all ready to give you behind-the-scenes access. Come armed with your curiosity and questions, and prepare yourself for a very unique tour of great magazine-making. Space is very limited, so RSVP to reserve your spot now.

Friday, September 28, 2012
9:30 am - 4:30 pm (end time is approximate)
We'll start in the Union Square area: we'll give you the exact location in a final details email on Thursday 9/27.

FREE for all SPD Student Members! Just reserve a ticket here to get on the list & indicate your tour choices in the next step.

$15 for non-members (buy tickets below)—pay below & indicate your tour choices in the RSVP here.

Remember, it's ONLY $25 to join as a Student Member ... if you join now, your admission will be FREE and you get lots of other awesome stuff. Membership fees are going up soon, so this is your last chance to get this super-low rate. So join now!

Purchase your ticket online below, and indicate your 1st, 2nd and 3rd tour preferences: choose from Tours A, B and C as described below.

We do our best to give you your top choice tour, but it's first-come, first-serve, so the earlier you RSVP, the better chance you have. You'll find out which tour you get when you arrive the morning of the event.

We'll send an email on Thursday, 9/27 with specific location details, but plan to meet us in the Union Square area.

TOUR A: Men's Health and The Huffington Post

TOUR B: Bloomberg BusinessWeek and Inked

TOUR C: People en Español and Seventeen

a government-issued photo I.D. for access to office buildings
money for lunch and possible subway travel
a notebook for notes and a bag since you'll be getting handouts and magazines
umbrella/raingear and comfortable shoes since we'll be walking to the different offices

Leave the résumés and portfolios at home ... we'll have a Portfolio Review and Workshop later in the year and you'll have the chance to review it with our panel of professionals at that time.

Space is limited so RSVP asap! Your tour preferences are just that; in other words, they are not guaranteed. Tours are assigned on a first-come, first-serve basis ... so the earlier you RSVP, the better chance you have of getting your top choice. This also means that if you are part of a large group registering, you may not all get assigned the same tour. Tour assignments will be given to you the morning of the event.

The Society of Publication Designers (SPD)

First and foremost, SPD is a membership organization dedicated to promoting and encouraging excellence in editorial design across all print and digital platforms.

Our members are art directors, designers, photo editors, photographers, illustrators and information graphics professionals, editors and students. Since drafting its charter in 1965, SPD remains the only organization specifically addressing the visual concerns of print and digital editorial professionals, whether that be journalism, storytelling, service or more. Editorial design plays a crucial role in shaping and documenting our common history; as such, the efforts of the Society serve to educate and enlighten our members, their fans, and the general public about the importance of magazines.

We love magazines and the people who make them, however they’re printed, called-up on your screen, or ported on your iPad.
