Event Details

This event was sold out, but we have added a 4th set of tours. Registration will re-open Wednesday, 9/18 at 6am EST, so please come back here or visit our blog to purchase a ticket. Spots will still be very limited, so be sure to do so asap. And mark your calendars for our next speaker event on October 22, details to come.

Our Pub(lications) Crawl is an annual day-long event where you'll get to tour the offices of two fantastic magazines and/or design firms for an in-depth look at the way things really work. Our tour hosts are all ready to give you behind-the-scenes access, so come armed with your curiosity and questions, and prepare yourself for a very unique tour of great magazine-making. Space is very limited, so RSVP to reserve your spot now.

Friday, September 27, 2013
9:15 am - 4:00 pm (end time is approximate)
We'll start in the Union Square area: we'll give you the exact location in a final details email on Thursday 9/26.

FREE for all SPD Student Members! But you must reserve your spot and give us your tour choices.

$15 for everyone else—pay below & indicate your tour choices in the RSVP here.

OR join now as a Student Member for $50... if you join now, your admission will be FREE to this and all our other events this year. Plus you get lots of other awesome stuff, like a free SPD Pub48 Annual (worth $65) and other awesome stuff (click here for the full details). You can join now using the form below and your Pub Crawl entry is FREE!

Because this event was previously sold out, you will most likely be assigned to the newly-added TOUR D. However, in the event a previously registered student drops out, please indicate your tour preferences from all 4 tour choices and we'll do our best to give you your topmost choices. It is first-come, first-serve, so the earlier you RSVP, the better chance you have. You'll find out which tour you get when you arrive the morning of the event ... but they're all so awesome, you'll be guaranteed to have a great experience whichever tour you get.

We'll send you an email on Thursday, 9/26 with specific location details, but until then, plan to meet us in the Union Square area.

TOUR ABon Appetit and Fortune

TOUR B: Nylon and The New Yorker

TOUR C: Pentagram and More

NEWLY ADDED!!!!  TOUR D:  Every Day with Rachael Ray and Popular Mechanics

a government-issued photo I.D. for access to office buildings
money for lunch and possible subway travel
a notebook for notes and a bag since you'll be getting handouts and magazines
umbrella/raingear and comfortable shoes since we'll be walking to the different offices

Leave the résumés and portfolios at home ... we'll have a Portfolio Review and Workshop later in the year and you'll have the chance to review it with our panel of professionals at that time.

Space is limited so RSVP asap! Your tour preferences are just that; in other words, they are not guaranteed. Tours are assigned on a first-come, first-serve basis ... so the earlier you RSVP, the better chance you have of getting your top choice. This also means that if you are part of a large group registering, you may not all get assigned the same tour. Tour assignments will be given to you the morning of the event.

The Society of Publication Designers (SPD)

First and foremost, SPD is a membership organization dedicated to promoting and encouraging excellence in editorial design across all print and digital platforms.

Our members are art directors, designers, photo editors, photographers, illustrators and information graphics professionals, editors and students. Since drafting its charter in 1965, SPD remains the only organization specifically addressing the visual concerns of print and digital editorial professionals, whether that be journalism, storytelling, service or more. Editorial design plays a crucial role in shaping and documenting our common history; as such, the efforts of the Society serve to educate and enlighten our members, their fans, and the general public about the importance of magazines.

We love magazines and the people who make them, however they’re printed, called-up on your screen, or ported on your iPad.
