Spatial Freakquencies explores the relationship between the architectural elements of techno music and the rhythms of the black dancing body

About this Event

Spatial Freakquencies by Dresher Ensemble Artist Residency 2019 Awardee Stephanie Hewett explores the relationship between the architectural elements of techno music and the rhythms of the black dancing body by incorporating movement-based choreography into the production of a techno track. Collaborators Stephanie Hewett and Nicolette Del Palacio (Dela Palace) aim to experiment with co-production and interdisciplinary performance while fervently highlighting and reclaiming techno music’s proximity to blackness.

Stephanie Hewett

Stephanie is a choreographer, movement researcher, performer, and teacher from the Bronx, New York (Lenape territory). She holds an MFA in Dance from Mills College, and was a 2019 Counterpulse EDGE resident artist. Her current research entails navigating performance through injury, pleasure frequencies, Detroit techno, dance floor (re)births, and excavating ancestral vestiges in the body. She is a collaborator/member of Lxs Dxs, a queer performance collective making messes in the Bay, LA, and abroad.

Nicolette Del Palacio

Dela Palace (Nicolette Del Palacio) is an Oakland-based DJ/producer from Phoenix, Arizona. A political organizer by trade, she’s drawn to the sharp edges and unapologetically activist sensibilities of electronic music. Her work treads the thin line separating accessible from abrasive, and she believes that the most assaulting sounds can generate the highest form of catharsis.
