About this Event

The Transmission of Vajrayana in the Modern World

"When East Meets West, sparks will fly."

~ Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche

A series of talks surveying the views, styles and teachings of contemporary Vajrayana teachers in the modern world by their close students.

Class Description: This is a critical time in the transmission of Vajrayana Buddhism to the modern world, including Asia, the West, and the entire world. After years of an initial honeymoon period, critical questions are arising around the dynamics and practices of Vajrayana. Deeper levels of culture shock are emerging. Principal among these are the guru-student relationship and the adaptation of tradition to modern circumstances.

At the same time, as Vajrayana has taken gradual root over half a century, and as practitioners have practiced, studied, and come to experience increasingly deeper levels of the teachings, a very rich, brilliant, and prolific contemporary expression of Vajrayana dharma is arising, as both teachers and students meet the challenges of the times.

This series of talks will present and examine the approach to teaching by several lineage teachers who have prominent roles in transmitting Vajrayana to the modern world, presented through the eyes of their students and our fellow practitioners. Each speaker will explore the particular approach of their teacher in engaging the modern world, discuss their approach to practice, then present a core teaching of the particular teacher.

When: Mondays, Oct. 14 - Dec. 9.

Where: Dharma Ocean

For whom: Vajrayana students, those who have received formal Vajrayana transmission from a lineage teacher.

What: Practice (meditation, guru yoga, guided meditation), talks, and discussion.

Cost: $125
