Event Details

Spark Portland is an opportunity for college-age and young professional adults to participate in a challenging, hands-on service project and explore how to live a passionate life of justice rooted in our Christian faith tradition.

Participants in Spark Portland will have the opportunity to connect with other young people of faith from various parts of the United States in service to provide much needed hands-on work. Our service site will relate to Dignity Village, a city-sanctioned homeless encampment in Portland housing un- and under-employed individuals.

Our first-ever young adult service immersion experience is certain to be fantastic. Network with co-workers, friends, and family. This is an event open to all!

Schedule Information

We will meet at our church home base in Portland at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, April 4. Our time together will conclude at 3 p.m. on Sunday, April 6.

Transportation and Logistical Details

Recognizing that many in our group will be assembling from different "starting points" around the United States, transportation is not included in the trip fee. For those beginning their journey in the Bay Area, we will collaborate to arrange ground transportation and book on similar flights out of San Jose-Mineta airport. In Portland, we will largely rely on the city's public transportation system, but plan on arranging shuttle transportation to and from the airport.

We are planning on staying in a budget-friendly, no-frills guesthouse near downtown Portland. (No sleeping on church floors!) Linens will be provided, however participants will need to appropriately pack toiletries and other essentials.

Financial Information

Thanks to the generous support of FCCPA, our participation fee is only $110 for FCCPA members, friends, and alumni.) This includes:

  • All program fees, including accommodations
  • All-day transit passes for Saturday and Sunday in Portland
  • Friday dinner, Saturday breakfast, lunch, and dinner, Sunday breakfast and lunch
  • An Engage journal to collect thoughts about one's service experience (or a water bottle, if using a journal from a past Engage experience!)
  • A Spark t-shirt

No major fundraising is conducted for Spark events. Financial assistance is available, and requests are handled in a confidential and dignified manner on a case-by-case basis by Rev. Daniel Ross-Jones, associate minister. No one is turned away from participating in Engage programs due to financial need!
