Description

"Spare the Rod: Do Black Lives Really Matter?"

Unfortunately, many of us have often heard language like this used in our households and communities:

“I’ll bust you in the head ‘till the white meat shows”

“I’ll give you something to cry about”

“Don’t make me get my belt…stick…extension cord”

“Go outside and bring me a switch”

“Spare the rod, spoil the child”

“I brought you into this world and I’ll take you out”

"Spare the Rod: Do Black Lives Really Matter?" is a two-part event that uses found materials to evoke memory, dialogue, and provide resources for communities to consider alternative methods for discipline.

The University of Texas at Austin and the University of Michigan published the journal article: Spanking and child outcomes: Old controversies and new meta-analyses, Journal of Family Psychology. This study looked at 50 years of research involving over 160,000 children that provided an analysis of outcomes associated with spanking stated: “The more children are spanked, the more likely they are to defy their parents and to experience increased anti-social behavior, aggression, mental health problems, and cognitive difficulties.”

We invite pro-spankers, non-spankers, and everyone in conversation without shaming or judgements to the following events:
