Event Details

Hello Everyone,

We've decided to do things a little bit different here in the Southwest Region this year.  We would like to offer you the opporutnity to send your family dues online via debit or credit card here on Eventbrite.

Feel free to give me a call if you have any questions.

Dear Parent:

As a part of the A Better Chance application, each parent signs a pledge committing to continued involvement in A Better Chance after the placement process is complete.  Each Scholar family has earned admission to a great school, but many are not receiving the other half of their benefit.  When our Scholars need help in school or want to meet friends from other schools in the area, they should have access to the network of Scholar families that stretches across the nation.   And there are so many unique opportunities that are provided for our students, from travel abroad to college previews to resume coaching.   During this academic year, we are going to designate in our database which families are considered active in their participation with the program and which are considered inactive.  Active families will receive more information about upcoming events and opportunities, be given first consideration for leadership opportunities within the program and much more.  Inactive families will still be considered a part of the A Better Chance program, but will not benefit from the same level of enrichment as those who are actively involved.

Being identified as an active family is easy!  There are only four requirements that must be met:

1. Parents-as-Partners Dues

Each family will be expected to pay annual dues of $40 to their regional Parents-as-Partners (PAP) chapter.  Payment can be made by check or money order, and arrangements can be made to divide the dues into smaller payments in the event of financial hardship.    These dollars will be used to offset the cost of planned Parents-as-Partners events during the year.

2. Attendance

Each family living within 50 miles of an active Parents-as-Partners group will be expected to attend at least four out of ten events per year, including workshops, parent meetings, information sessions or regional celebrations.  For those living outside of a 50-mile radius, this requirement will be waived.  For day school families, children and parents are both expected to attend, while boarding school families can be represented by parental participation alone.

3. Volunteering

Each family will be required to commit to at least one volunteer activity per year, including planning an information session, helping at an Interview Day program and participating in a community service project.

4. Contact Update

Each family will be asked to update their contact information at the start of each year.

We have been tracking this information since the start of the school year, so some of our families are well on the way to being active participants, already!  If you have questions about this new system, please feel free to reach out to your regional Program Manager for more information.  We look forward to partnering with you to make our 50th anniversary year the best in the history of our organization.

A Better Chance, Southwest Region

Since 1963, A Better Chance has been opening the door to educational opportunities for thousands of young people of color in this nation.  Our mission is to increase substantially the number of well-educated young people of color who are capable of assuming positions of responsibility and leadership in American society.  We carry out our mission through our signature College Preparatory Schools Program (“CPSP”), which annually recruits, refers and supports about 500 A Better Chance Scholars at more than 300 of the nation’s leading boarding, day and public schools.
