**PLEASE NOTE - This testing session is for FIRST-TIME COLLEGE FRESHMEN ONLY who plan to attend the Spring 2017 semester. Please do not sign up for this event if you are a transfer or returning student. Students should sign up for a testing session on the campus that you plan to attend when you start your classes at JCTC. The Southwest Campus does not offer ESL testing or classes. If you need ESL you will need to schedule with the Downtown Campus.
Testing will begin PROMPTLY at the starting time listed for your event. Please plan to arrive at least 15 minutes early, as late arrivals WILL NOT be admitted. If you arrive late once the testing session has begun, you will not be admitted and will have to reschedule for another session.
We STRONGLY encourage you to prepare ahead of time to take your placement test because your scores will determine what classes you will be able to take during your first semester, and beyond. Please take the placement test seriously. Being properly prepared can save you time and money!
Here are some sample tests you can take a look at to study and properly prepare for your placement test:
Reading & Writing:
In the left-hand column, click on “Compass Test Preparation,” then scroll down until you see the list of see a list of “Self-Assessment Modules.” These are free and the answer key is at the end of each test.
Select “Free Practice Tests for ACT” for Reading & Writing only. Avoid the sections that want to charge you for materials.
Click on the “Practice Exams,” any of the Math College Readiness or the Math College Algebra Practice Tests will give you a good idea of what will be on the test, and help you study.
What to bring on testing day:
· Student ID number (EMPL-ID) and a photo ID are required to take the placement test. If you have ACT, SAT, COMPASS or KYOTE scores that exempt you from taking any portion of the test, please bring a copy of those scores with you to the testing session. Simply submitting your high school transcript to the admissions office does not guarantee your scores will be loaded into our database. If you do not bring scores with you, you will be REQUIRED to take all three portions of the placement test.
Please bring a calculator with you for testing. You may bring any standard scientific calculator. Some types of graphing calculators are allowed as well. However, the use of any calculators with the Zoom Math App, or App for Math, are prohibited. CELL PHONE USAGE, OR THE USE OF ANY OTHER TYPE OF ELECTRONIC DEVICE, IS NOT PERMITTED IN THE ASSESSMENT CENTER, NOT EVEN TO USE AS A CALCULATOR. Please note: LATE ARRIVALS WIL NOT BE ADMITTED, if you arrive late once the testing session has begun, you will not be admitted and will have to reschedule for another session, thank you.
A student should plan on being on campus for at least three hours, or for a MINIMUM of one hour for each test you need to take. However, there is no time limit on the testing, so you will be allowed as much time as you need in order to complete your testing. Please plan accordingly so you will not have to rush through your testing session.
