Event description

Description

Join Greenbelt Alliance on a history and ecology hike to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the "discovery" of San Francisco Bay.

Just two hundred and fifty years ago, San Francisco Bay was unknown to Europeans, though California's native tribes had lived along the bay for thousands of years. That changed on November 4, 1769, when Gaspar De Portola's expedition of Spanish soldiers, Baja California Indians, and a Mexican priest crested Sweeney Ridge and discovered "an immense arm of the sea."

Our route takes us through the Crystal Springs Watershed and the Sweeney Ridge district of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area to the two monuments at the Bay Discovery site. We will then continue on the Bay Area Ridge Trail, with dramatic views of the ocean to our right and the Bay to the left, as well as San Bruno Mountain, Mount Diablo, the East Bay, and the South Bay. Environmental historian David Schmidt will talk about the this year's three big anniversaries of historic turning points ( 1769, 1869, and 1969) that forever changed the Bay Area.

WHERE TO MEET
Take I-280 to San Bruno and exit at Sneath Lane, just north of the 380/280 junction that goes to SFO. On Sneath Lane go west (uphill) for a mile as Sneath curves around, goes over the hill, then downhill and ends at the trailhead. Parking is limited at the trailhead, so carpooling is encouraged.

NOTES
Bring water, lunch, dress in layers, and wear good hiking shoes. Bring poles if you normally use them. If you have questions about this outing email Ken Lavin or phone (415) 543-6771 x321.
