Tidal Wetland Restoration Field Trip
South Bay Salt Ponds
November 13, 2013
10:30am – 3:30pm
Join us for an opportunity to learn and interact with the managers and scientists leading restoration efforts at the South Bay Salt Ponds.
The South Bay Salt Pond Restoration Project is the largest tidal wetland restoration project on the West Coast. When complete, the restoration will convert 15,100 acres of commercial salt ponds at the south end of San Francisco Bay to a mix of tidal marsh, mudflat and other wetland habitats. This field trip will provide a hand-on opportunity to learn and interact with managers and scientists involved in the South Bay Salt Ponds Restoration project.
Featured speakers include: John Bourgeois, State Coastal Conservancy; Laura Valoppi, US Geological Survey; Eric Mruz, Don Edwards San Francisco Bay National Wildlife Refuge; Brenda Buxton, State Coastal Conservancy
Discussion topics will include
- Ecological trade-offs in large-scale restoration projects
- The use of science and adaptive management
- How tidal wetland restoration projects could be affected by sea-level rise
- Best practices for tidal marsh restoration
- Managing sediment through local beneficial reuse at restoration sites including creating upland transition zones
- Funding restoration projects

This workshop is hosted by the San Francisco Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve Coastal Training Program. We work to link science and management through training and technical assistance. We strive to provide timely, practical courses that address high priority issues of local and regional importance to planners, managers and regulators of coastal area resources.
