Event description

Description

Join us for the last of Sanctuary Kitchen's winter series: Soup & Salaam! Soup & Salaam aims to bring the community together through the warm and nourishing power of soup and conversation. We invite you come and break bread over soup with our refugee and immigrant neighbors. It will be an inclusive space to share stories, deepen mutual understanding, and form real connections.

Each month, we feature a different Sanctuary Kitchen chef, a traditional soup, salad and bread of her country of origin, and her culinary and cultural stories. April's comforting meal will consist of Congolese ugali na samaki na mboga za majani - fish soup, sautéed greens and ugali - prepared by Congolese chef, Chabusiku. Ugali is a stiff cornmeal mixture that is used to pick up other dishes, like stew and vegetables.

Chabusiku is a refugee from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, who arrived in New Haven three years ago, after spending over twenty years living in a refugee camp in the neighboring country of Tanzania. She learned to cook from her mother, and began cooking herself at the age of seven. Chabusiku is happy to be part of Sanctuary Kitchen, and wants to share her traditional Congolese cuisine and culture.

Handmade ceramic soup bowls made by local potters are available for purchase - proceeds support Sanctuary Kitchen programming.

The Kitchen at CitySeed is located in the CitySeed office at 817 Grand Ave. -- two blocks from State St. and downtown New Haven. Free parking is available along Grand Ave. and on surrounding streets.
