SOUNDINGS: Better Listening through Poetry
Workshop led by Sharon Bryan

Date: Tuesday, July 12
Time: 5:30PM – 7:30PM
Location: Center for Professional Development, 10 Beacon Street, 2nd floor, Somerville

Listening connects us to ourselves and to each other—family, friends, colleagues, patients, clients, and strangers. But our busy lives and noisy urban environment make it hard to hear what those voices are saying. Nothing is better practice for cutting through the static than listening to poetry, whether you’re reading it on the page or hearing it read aloud.

Silence. The poet Allen Grossman said, “Every poem is spoken into the silence that precedes it.” So is the beginning of any conversation. The first step in listening is silencing your own thoughts and letting the words come into that open space.

Listening. I’ll read a few of my own poems and let you read some from the handout aloud. Listen for the words and the music—the rhythm of the lines, and the sounds the words make as they rub up against each other.

Talking. We’ll talk about what you hear in the poems, what surprises you, what moves you. Then I’ll be interested to hear your thoughts about your own listening experiences and how they might be changed by reading poetry.

A light dinner will be served.

Sharon Bryan is the author of four books of poems, most recently Sharp Stars from BOA Editions. She is also the editor of Where We Stand: Women Poets on Literary Tradition and co-editor of Planet on the Table: Poets on the Reading Life. Her awards include two NEA Fellowships, an Academy of American Poets Prize, and a Governor's Award and Artists' Trust Award from Washington State. She has taught as a visiting poet at numerous universities, including Dartmouth and Brandeis, and is currently on the faculty of the Lesley MFA Program in Creative Writing.
