About this Event

Sound Perspective (Virtual Livestream Performance)

The Virtually Livestreamed concert program will include Andre Caplet’s Legende, Ida Gotkovsky’s Incandescence, Phil Woods’ Sonata and a new work by Dr. Aaron Lington, Song, Interlude and Dance, commissioned by Dr. Witt and premiered on this recital. The first half of the program will feature a more traditional concert repertoire for saxophone and piano, with Dr. Andreea Mut, while the second half of the program features music that defies genre, straddling between classical and jazz influences, with Ted Wenglinski on piano.

Legende, by Andre Caplet, is an early work, from 1903, for saxophone, originally written for a chamber ensemble, performed here just with piano. This piece has not been performed but a few times until being rediscovered in the late 1980s. Caplet was a friend and colleague of Claude Debussy and is known for having done orchestrations of some of Debussy's music, as well as to conduct the London premiere of Debussy's Pelleas and Melisande.

Incandescence by Ida Gotkovsky, is a much more current work, commissioned in 2011 by 25 saxophonists from around the world. It is for tenor saxophone and piano. There are few large-scale concert works for the tenor saxophone and this piece is certainly a stand-out in the repertoire. Gotkovsky is a French born, award-winning composer, who has written many important pieces for wind instruments. Much of her music shows an influence of the great 20th century French composer, Olivier Messiaen.

The performance will also be presented live, in-person to a limited audience. Tickets for the Live In-Person performance can be found here.
