Join an intimate group of educator-participants at the world's only phonological awareness retreat. Featuring interactive sessions led by Color Vowel Chart co-authors Karen Taylor and Shirley Thompson and mind-blowing talks with Dr. Robin Barr, we will explore the phonology of spoken English through Vowel Yoga, music, vowel painting, and other brain-opening activities that expand one's awareness of sound in speech. Arrive with an open mind and leave inspired and prepared to reach your learners more effectively than ever before.

Who should attend? Teacher educators, ESL/EFL instructors, literacy tutors, speech therapists, reading interventionists, advocate parents, and anyone interested in linguistics and the English language.

Registration: $425 (deadline October 1st)
Fee includes workshop materials, painting supplies, and end-of-retreat dinner; does not include lodging, snacks, or other meals. All participants will receive a certificate of participation.

      • Technique Lab: Essential techniques for a Color Vowel Approach (concurrent sessions)
      • Reflection: Thoughts from today, questions for tomorrow
    • Friday, October 7: Extending Sound Awareness (9:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m., 6:30 p.m.-9 p.m.)
      • Kazoo orchestra: What acoustic flooding can do for language teaching
      • Vowel Yoga II: Teaching reduced vowels through 'Schwakker Goalie'
      • Technique Lab: Essential techniques for a Color Vowel Approach (concurrent sessions)
      • 'I say tomato': Accent variation and the Color Vowel Chart
      • (free/creative time from 2-6 p.m.)
      • 6:30 p.m. Evening lecture by Dr. Robin Barr: 'I say tomato': Accent variation in a diverse society"
    • Saturday, October 8: Visualizing Sound Awareness (10 a.m.-4 p.m., 6:30-9 p.m.)
      • Vowel Yoga III: Semivowels, liquids, and the vowel-consonant frontier
      • R-controlled vowels and other phonological tricksters
      • Technique Lab: Essential techniques for a Color Vowel Approach (concurrent sessions)
      • Workshop: Painting Sound In Color (art supplies will be provided, but also bring an iPad if you have one)
      • Songfest 2016: Using music to expand sound awareness

      • 6:30-9 p.m. Sound Awareness 2016 Dinner and Share-Out

Preparation: Participants should be familiar with the Color Vowel Chart and have some experience using a Color Vowel Approach with their learners/ clients. Participants will be asked to bring their own copy of The Color Vowel Approach to this event, as we will be referencing it throughout the retreat.
