Art Crime: The Perils of Buying and Selling Art

Join us for an evening talk with Laura Patten, a recent Sotheby's Institute of Art graduate, delving into crime within the art market, with an introduction by Judith Prowda, Art Law professor at Sotheby's Institute of Art, New York.

About the Speakers:

Laura Patten: Ms. Patten is a recent Sotheby's Institute of Art Graduate. She currently works for Deloitte Risk and Financial Advisory. Previously she served 16 years in the U.S. federal government, both in the United States and abroad. Most recently, she led U.S. government analysis of the multibillion dollar global art and antiquities market. She also served in numerous U.S. embassies throughout Europe, Central Asia and the Middle East. Prior to joining the government, Ms. Patten worked as a journalist.

Judith Prowda: Ms. Prowda is an MA, Art Business Faculty member and Art Law Professor at Sotheby’s Institute of Art- NY. She is an attorney, mediator, and arbitrator focused on art law, copyright, entertainment and commercial law. Ms. Prowda is the author of numerous publications, including Visual Arts and the Law: A Handbook for Professionals (2013). She is Past Chair of the Entertainment, Arts and Sports Law Section of the NYS Bar Association and Chair of the Fine Arts Committee, as well as a member of the Art Law Committee of the NYC Bar. She is also a leader in the intellectual property field, and has consulted at Sokolow, Dunaud, Mercadier & Carreras in Paris and at World Intellectual Property Organization in Geneva. Prior to studying law, she was a reporter in the World Section at Time magazine and a French-English interpreter at the U.S. Department of State.
