Description

Soseongri (소성리)

Director: Park Bae-il (2017, 87 mins)

Soseongri follows a community of senior citizens whose way of life is threatened when the decision is made to place the US THAAD anti-missile system in their South Korean village. Everyday life in Soseongri, a farming village located in the North Gyeongsang Province, has been severely impacted by the gradual departure of its young people, resulting in a disproportionately high population of elder citizens. That quiet rural life is then thrown into disarray with the struggle over the US THAAD installation. The film documents both the resistance against THAAD, and the swift and aggressive manner in which the South Korean state shut down the demonstrations. Since 2010, Park Bae-il has, both individually, and through his work with film collective Ozi Film, built a diverse body of work documenting workers’ struggles, the fight for women’s rights and for those living with disabilities throughout South Korea.

Join us for a screening of this film and a panel on the struggle against the continuing US militarization of Korea - while South and North Korean reconciiatory talks continue and in the wake of the US-North Korea Summit. The director and some of the villagers will talk to us via skype.
