Event Details

Join us for a riveting presentation of classical music to celebrate the arrival of spring to the Metropolitan Washington, DC Area.  This event is free, yet donations are strongly suggested. This engaging recital will feature Sopranos Renee Ombaba and Sandi Lewanika and Pianist Williams Jones. These artists will cover various works from operas such as  Les Contes D'Hoffman, European art songs, and songs by African-American composers.   We look forward to sharing this special event with you. 

About the Artists:

Renee Ombaba

Renee Namakau Ombaba most recently earned third place in The National Association of Negro Musicians, Inc’s Local Competition in Washington, D.C..   A trained vocalist, she earned her bachelor’s degree in Vocal Performance from Jackson State University in Jackson, MS. There she performed with the school’s Opera Workshop, gave many recitals, and joined and performed with the MADDRAMA Performance Troupe, a drama group founded to cultivate student’s performance abilities and opportunities.   While earning her Master’s in Southern Studies from the University of Mississippi, she joined the Ole Miss Theatre group and performed in the ensembles of Hello, Dolly! and Hairspray. Ombaba made her acting debut in the music video of vocalist Shacara Rogers in 2018.  She also takes Improv at the Anacostia Arts Center where she is expanding her abilities as a performer.  Under the supervision of Kelvin Page, Ombaba soars as a vocalist and continues to learn to fine tune her talent in classical voice. She hopes to work in the next Emmy Award winning series or in any feature opposite Viola Davis. After she completes her PhD in African Studies at Howard University, she hopes to become a professor.  Under the advisement of Dr. Msia Clark, Ombaba works tirelessly to complete her proposal for her research on African immigrants in the U.S. South from 1958-1974.  You can find Ms. Ombaba in the inaugural Modern American Miss Virginia Pageant in summer 2019.

 

Sandi Lewanika 


Sandi Lewanika’s journey in music began with piano lessons in the first grade. Following her senior year of high school, Ms. Lewanika performed at Carnegie Hall, premiering Joseph Martin’s Heartsongs with the Mississippi Girl Choir. She has studied piano with Dr. Wilfred Delphin and Manabu Takasawa. She is currently studying voice with Mr. Kelvin Page and studying piano with Dr. Raymond Jackson. She received her Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance (magna cum laude) from the Xavier University of Louisiana and her Master of Music in Piano Performance from the University of Rhode Island. Upon graduating from Xavier, she was recognized among the 2014 Who’s Who Among Students in American Colleges and Universities scholarand received the Sister Elise Sisson Performance Award from Xavier University of Louisiana. In 2016, she received the University of Rhode Island Diversity Award for Excellence in Leadership and Service. She competed in the Chaminade Club 2016 Music Festival in Providence, RI, winning the award for Top Performer.Lewanika performed a tribute to Rev. Jesse Jackson, Sr. featuring soprano, Audrey DuBois Harris. She received a full scholarship into the International Lyric Academy’s Summer Program in Vicenza Italy, where she worked as an accompanist for vocalist and performed piano in the production of Giacomo Puccini’s Suor Angelica. She is currently an active accompanist and vocalist at Trinity Episcopal Church and various schools and organizations throughout the DMV area.
