Event description

Description

Sons is an enthno-cultural narrative supportive discussion group that addresses the psychosocial and cultural
needs of gay men of color struggling with depression. Mental health providers that have experience dealing
with this community have noted a positive correlation between men who have health relationships with their
mothers and positive interpersonal relationships with their peers. This group was formed from the
overwhelming feedback that arises from the ground breaking documentary “You Are Not Alone” that
addresses the issue of depression and suicide among African-American men.

Since literature suggests that there is a connection between coping with stigma, internalized oppression and
depressed feelings (Ross, 2008), that the model will be adapted to include additional sessions addressing “coming
out,” societal oppression, and their impact on mood for LGBTQ peoples of color (Ross, 2008). There is some indication that depression is more prevalent among LGBTQ people as compared to heterosexuals and gender-conforming individuals (Ross, 2008). A multicultural approach to counseling is grounded in the understanding that individuals are, first and foremost, whole beings, and an approach to healing must include cognitive, emotional, physical, spiritual, and contextual/sociopolitical/community-based considerations (Hagen, 2011).

The goal of this group is to create a safe space that is culturally appropriate and spiritually supportive, an
environment where individuals managing multiple marginalized identities can begin to remove the layers of
shame and allow healing to begin within the relational therapeutic practice.
