What drives a songwriter to write? Is it always a twisted and tormented soul that wrenches a song free? What comes first, the melody or the lyrics? Learn the deep secrets as songwriters bare their souls with songs old and new in a song circle at The Venue. Each Songwriter Session will include three songwriters performing their songs and speaking to their craft. This will be an intimate evening of performance and storytelling led by songwriter Dave Glynn.

About our host: Dave Glynn has been writing songs since he became a latch key kid at age 10, singing to the birds and the squirrels as he could never manage to hold on to his house key. Dave made his professional debut in 1975, at age 16, at the famous Earl of Old Town in Chicago, home to songwriting greats John Prine and Steve Goodman. Dave has since written and performed his songs on the Chicago scene and Midwest college campuses. For the last 20 years, Dave has been the leader of Aurora’s own, Empty Can Band.

Our talented songwriters for this evening will be:

Vivian Garcia

I have been singing since..well..since I can remember. I picked up the guitar late in the game and began learning rhythms from Latin America and moved on to study some traditional flamenco at the Old Town School of Folk music and eventually took lessons in Granada, Spain at Escuela Carmen de las Cuevas. I am a singer who plays guitar, not the other way around and so I leave the complicated guitar work to the awesome people I get to perform with from time to time. I have been a gigging musician since 1999 playing shows in Sarasota, Florida ; Chicago, Illinois, Madrid, Spain where I lived from 2010-2013 while pursuing an M.A. in Spanish and Latin American Literature. It is in Madrid that I began writing my own music and as life would have it, I joke that I moved to Spain to compose in English. I was lucky to find a group of talented musicians to support my work and help me record my first original album, " Cold Bed" in 2012.

Lisa Gloria

I’ve studied with some great people including at University of Illinois and Old Town School of Folk Music. The magic of collaboration never gets old. I hope to one day get to the purest lines that express simple, true things, and then I’ll be done. I front a group called The Lucky Ones based out of Aurora, IL.

The Kevin Trudo

The Kevin Trudo is a singer, songwriter, and musician from Aurora, Illinois who hates singers and songwriters. The idea of a passionate and sensitive writer sharing his songs with an acoustic guitar is nowhere to be found here. Yes, he writes insightful and occasionally heartbreaking songs; those songs have been hummed into a few thousand hearts over the last 15 years and of course he’s a sensitive artist and passionate performer – but ask Kevin and he’ll tell you that it’s supposed to be fun, it’s supposed to rock, it’s supposed to make you move.
