About this Event

Join us at the Cockpit for the first of a series of songwriters circle events with Phil Caffrey, David Neil Crabtee and Hayley Mckay each performing their own songs and accompanying each other in what will no doubt be an amazing night of original and spontanious live performance.

PHIL CAFFREY

The Caffreys - Brothers Phil, Peter, & Paul Caffrey have been singing together for most of their lives. Whether at family parties or in the front garden to impress their neighbours in the Holy Cross area of Wallsend, they needed no excuse to sing.

Their professional singing career began when they secured a recording contract with DJM records, the home of Elton John. Their band, 'Arbre', was hailed as Britain’s answer to the Eagles, but after making two critically well received albums and touring with Fairport Convention and Jim Capaldi - amongst others - they went their separate ways.

The brothers then recorded for Phonogram records with noted producer Gus Dudgeon (David Bowie, Chris Rea, Lindisfarne, Elkie Brooks) but commercial success still eluded the Caffreys.

Phil Caffrey continued to write songs and it wasn’t long before he formed a new band to perform his material. Whilst 'Caffrey' gained a good local following for their melodic rock – headlining at Newcastle’s Mayfair Ballroom – it was Phil’s songwriting that gained the attention of major music publishers. This resulted in Kiki Dee recording a song he had co-written with another respected local musician - George Lamb.

After the demise of the Caffreys, Phil kept his hand in by providing backing vocals for such diverse talents as heavy rock band Saxon and local hero Jimmy Nail, whilst continuing to write.

Phil is a highly respected and extremely talented musician, vocalist and writer and continues to perform live with the Caffreys and his other projects.

DAVID NEIL CRABTREE

As well as fronting bands across venues, festivals and broadcast events across his beloved county of North Yorkshire and beyond – David Neil Crabtree is fast emerging as a contemporary and highly versatile music talent, with a loyal and rapidly developing fan base spanning Country, Contemporary, Blues, soft and heavy Rock music genres. His current performance catalogue is varied and prolific – from his recent EP release, Girl Named Whisky (available on Spotify) with its contagiously melodic lilt in the gallic, love-ballad tradition, through to the raw, unsettlingly vengeful narrative that underpins his popular and well-acclaimed Wildfire (available on YouTube).

Dave’s vocal and guitar expression reflects his own, at times, painful journey through manhood and through the landscapes, at home and abroad, that inspire him constantly to create, compose and perform – for camera and for stage.

Of his own music and influences, Dave says: “I am constantly drawn to relate, through lyrical expression and music composition, almost everything I feel and witness around the emotions that innately bind (or indeed separate) us as human beings; whether we experience new love, the awe of a landscape, nostalgic reflection, or whenever we suffer loss. Whether we feel hurt – or redeemed – in life. “We stand in the long shadows of musical giants – both past and present. I’ve been lucky enough to find myself inspired, rather than intimidated, by their greatness. As the next generation of musicians, poets and singer/songwriters, I believe our ‘calling’ lies in keeping alive their art and spirits, whilst giving unique expression to the voices, experiences, dreams and preferences of emerging generations of music enthusiasts and followers around the world.”

HAYLEY MCKAY

"Beautiful voice & moving lyrics, infectious pop melodies/country influences"(The Telegraph)

'The up and coming apple of the British music industry’s eye hails from a town in the UK called Darlington' - Elmore Magazine, USA"

Hailing from Darlington Hayley McKay is an extraordinarily gifted singer/songwriter with an amazingly pure voice. From studying at BIMM, after winning a National competition, to appearing at Glastonbury, Cornbury, Latitude and Northumberland Live, Summertyne Festival, and performing in Nashville and supporting iconic artists such as Tom Jones, Martha Reeves, Albert Lee and Scouting For Girls, Hayley McKay is attracting attention wherever she goes.

In the past few years, Hayley has performed her original songs on RTE, Irelands biggest daytime TV, and STV Scottish TV. She was also invited to perform and record a video at Bob Harris house, whispering Bob session Under the Apple tree. As well as singing, Hayley plays acoustic guitar, piano and songwrites. Many of her songs have been recorded, and she has worked with top producers and Geoff Pesche at Abby Rd Studios.

Hayley has been likened to Eva Cassidy, Colbie Caillat, and LeAnn Rimes thanks to her hauntingly beautiful voice and moving lyrics.

Hayley has a distinctive style that shows her to be an all-round soulful country artist with flair that is very much her own.

This has led to the singer-songwriter heading to Nashville to co-write with twice Grammy-nominated songwriter Jan Buckingham (Whitney Houston), performing in Whispering Bob Harris's home studio, as well as sharing the bill with, among others, Tom Jones, Albert Lee, Scouting for Girls, Jamie Cullum and Seal.

Original songs are played worldwide in Café Nero stores, and she has sang on the soundtrack for Harrigan starring Steven Tomkinson, Sunday For Sammy at Newcastle City Hall, and has acted and sang on various educational films for schools nationwide.
