Description

Three phenomenal North Carolina singer/songwriters grace the stage of Magnolia Roots on Friday night, March 20. $10 suggested donation - 100% to the artists. Presented by The Wake Forest Listening Room.

CHET NICHOLS
Chet Nichols is an Americana/roots singer-songwriter from the Wilson/Rocky Mount NC area. A performer of 35+ years and full time songwriter of 20+ years, with influences and comparisons ranging from Bruce Springsteen, John Mellencamp, John Prine, and Steve Earle among others .... blue collar stories of everyday real life struggles and triumphs. Throw in a love song, a nostalgic song, and just a good 'ol fun song, and you've got a well crafted show that takes you on a roller coaster of emotion through song! 2019 has been good to Nichols, with a Carolina Music Awards nomination, multiple songwriter showcases, festival appearances, full length music video "Go Go Boots", and currently wrapping up final mixes on his 3rd studio CD "Demolition Day", at Bongo John Studio in Garner NC. Nichols has performed with or opened shows for such acts as Chip Robinson (Backsliders), Kenny Roby (6 String Drag), Dillon Fence, John Howie Jr., Mike "Lightnin' Wells, Countdown Quartet, with a September appearance with Jonathan Byrd & the Pickup Cowboys upcoming! Nichols performs as a solo, with an accompanist, and as a full band, Chet Nichols & the Repeat Offenders.

EMILY STEWART
Emily Stewart plays original tunes rooted in the folk, country, and blues traditions of the deep south. She first discovered her voice while perched in a south Alabama church pew as a child, and her vocal stylings are those of a true southern siren. Her roots as a writer also reach back to her hometown, Alabama's literary capital, where she was raised in the belly of the family newspaper and commissioned as a columnist before growing tall enough to reach the employee time clock. With lyrics and melodies that channel the strength of Odetta, the delicate twang of Kitty Wells, and the forthright softness of Loretta Lynn, Emily finds a song in every story.

FLORENCE DORE
“Onstage, Dore's academia goes out the window, and she can rock with the best of them.” So says one reviewer of Nashville native Florence Dore, who played with various punk, rock and country bands for 15 years before cutting her first LP "Perfect City" in 2001 with Eric Ambel. In his write-up of Perfect City, John Pareles of the New York Times called her voice “plaintive.” A professor by day, teaching songwriting and literature at UNC Chapel Hill, Florence has hosted a conference at the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame and sits on the board of the Bob Dylan Archives. The Posies covered her song, “Christmas” on a 1994 Geffen release, and in recent years she has performed with her husband, Will Rigby, and Peter Holsapple, founding members of pop legends the dBs. Florence is putting out a book on literature and rock featuring discussions with Richard Thompson, Greil Marcus, Peter Guralnick, Lucinda Williams, and Steve Earle. And now she is also making a new album.
