Songs of Love and Devotion: A Weekend Retreat of Ecstatic Singing with Parvathy Baul

We’re delighted to welcome Parvathy Baul to Avalon Yoga, 370 California Ave, Palo Alto on September 8th & 9th, 2018 from 1:00 – 5:00 pm where she will lead us in a weekend retreat of Baul music, movement, philosophy and spiritual insights.

About the Bauls

The Baul tradition is one of devotion (bhakti), expressed primarily through music and movement. Emerging from what is now West Bengal and Bangladesh, Baul practices belong to a nonconformist "counter tradition" that evolved from the deepest layers of Indian yogic tradition. It is syncretic mix of Hindu, Buddhist and Sufi devotional practices.

The Bauls are referred to as the “Honey Gatherers”, divinely intoxicated bards seeking the nectar of divine union through song. They believe neither in God nor in heaven, but in the universality of being. For millennia, Baul songs have been passed down from teacher to student, often conveyed in a unique poetic form that lies between philosophy and poetry, music and dance.

About Parvathy

Parvathy Baul is a master practitioner, performer and teacher of the Baul tradition and is a recent recipient of India's prestigious Sangeet Natak Akademi award. She is also an instrumentalist, storyteller and painter. She has performed in over forty countries at various concert halls and music festivals.

Besides sharing Baul songs with people around the world, Parvathy is making systematic efforts to preserve and continue the tradition of the Bauls among future generations. She is the founder of Tantidhatri, an international women’s performance festival, and co-founder of the Ekathara Kalari school in Kerala, India for training in both song and traditional spiritual practice.

The Weekend Retreat

This weekend immersion will focus on the yoga of song in the Baul tradition. We will chant, sing, dance and play music with simple instruments. Parvathy will share the history and practices of the Bauls, tell us their stories and discuss the deeper spiritual and philosophical lessons embedded in the songs we learn.

No previous experience or knowledge of Baul is required. Prepare to sing, move, laugh and sweat! Please join us!

Supporting the Center in Bengal

Parvathy is in the process of establishing a Baul educational and cultural center in Shantiniketan. This center will preserve and transmit the artistic and spiritual traditions of the Bauls and reach out to children and women from neighboring villages, offering instruction in music, song, and yoga.

The $200 fee for this 8-hour retreat (and any additional donation you make) will go towards supporting Parvathy’s vision for this center and will be fully tax-deductible through SACSA (Society for Arts and Culture of South Asia), a registered 501c3 non-profit organization that has been actively working with Parvathy and her educational center since April 2017.

Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions. We hope to see you on this special weekend!
