Beth Anne Cole singes Yiddish songs and music from her upcoming CD. Martin van de Ven, clarinet, Tania Gill, piano, and a surprise guest.

Beth Anne Cole is a singer, actress, songwriter, painter and poet. She has worked extensively in the theatre (Shaw Festival, Stratford, National Arts Centre), on CBC radio and television (“Morningside”, “Mr. Dressup”) and on the concert stage in Canada and the U.S (Glenn Gould Theatre, Toronto; Weill Hall, Carnegie Hall, New York; Boston Conservatory, Boston). She has written songs for “Sesame Street” and her own CDs “Gifts in the Old, Old Ground” and “Song under the Stair”.

Acclaimed composer and pianist Tania Gill is a key figure in the Toronto scenes of jazz and popular music. She has worked with diverse world-class artists including Deep Dark United, The Flying Bulgars, Brodie West, Andrew Downing’s Melodeon, Charles Spearin’s The Happiness Project, Mary Margaret O’Hara and Anthony Braxton. Tania has performed in major festivals and has toured internationally.

Her long-awaited 2010 debut recording, Bolger Station (Barnyard Records), with Lina Allemano/tpt, Clinton Ryder/bass and Jean Martin/drums was ‘disc of the week’ and short- listed for ‘disc of the year’ by The Globe and Mail, and was nominated for debut album of the year in The Village Voice jazz critics’ poll. The Tania Gill Quartet toured Canada in 2012.

Tania has a MMUS in Jazz Performance from the University of Toronto, a BMUS in Jazz Performance from McGill University, studied classical piano at the University of Victoria, and has attended the Banff Centre for the Arts. She has taught music privately for twenty years, formerly taught piano and ensembles in the Humber Community Music School and has been a clinician/adjudicator at festivals in Ontario and Manitoba

A mainstay of the Canadian Folk and Jazz scene for well over a decade, Martin van de Ven is a former member of the Flying Bulgar Klezmer Band and a frequent performer and instructor at festivals around the world. A unique stylist, Martin brings fire, elegance and humour to his performances with his current bands, Beyond the Pale and his duo project with guitarist Brian Katz, “Collected Stories”.

His original compositions carve new musical territory, rooted in traditional folk styles but informed by Jazz, Classical, and New Music.
