Event description
Sondra Sun-Odeon band (Desyre album release), with Secret Flowers, Nico Turner

About this Event

Sondra Sun-Odeon is a Los Angeles and Brooklyn-based voice, composer, and recording artist. A classically-trained pianist and self-taught guitar player, her music aims to describe the inexpressible and reach for what is beyond the realms of our tangible everyday lives. Her hard-to-define sound mixes elements of post-rock, experimental noise, ethereal shoegaze, Sabbath-y moments, alongside a voice that holds grace and defiance. Her live band has brought a heavier sound with Alex DeGroot of Zola Jesus on guitar, Cameron Wisch (Porches) on drums, and a rotating cast of additional players and backup singers.

Recorded by Alex De Groot (Zola Jesus), DESYRE includes collaborators Thor Harris (SWANS), J.R. Bohannon (Ancient Ocean), Lia Simone Braswell (A Place to Bury Strangers) and Mary Lattimore on harp, and will see its release on Nov 22 via Graveface Records. All formats (LP, cassette, CD, digital) will be available at the show.

Secret Flowers are a new psychedelic rock band out of Los Angeles formed in 2018 by Michael Hentz (vocals, guitar), Jacquelyn Sky (vocals, drums), David Greening (guitar), and Abraham Rodriguez-Smith (bass).

Against the vast wall of psych music, the Secret Flowers create a downtempo dream-like sonicscape by layering ethereal textures over palpable and laid back grooves. Featuring male/female duo of voices Michael Hentz (originally of NY) and Jacquelyn Sky (LA) first came together through darker neo-psych influences like Wooden Shjips and Mazzy Star. They quickly brought in David Greening (LA) on lead guitar adding in layers and breathable melodic lines over Michael’s guitar to generate the dreamlike sonic state. Not long after, Abraham Rodriguez-Smith (LA) solidified the rhythmic line-up and vision alongside drummer Jacquelyn of sway-worthy Motown-esque grooves that anchor in the free floating feels of the high end.

Only several months into their existence, the 4-piece are in studio completing their first EP of 5 songs. Tracking at Big Ego Studios in Long Beach they are using a semi-live limited channel board recording process to hone in on their free-form improvised nature that can easily coax you into that hazy feel-good place.

Nico Turner

As a contributor to the rise of experimental music in Los Angeles, multi-instrumentalist, Nico Turner, first became known in the underground music scene with her band VOICEsVOICEs and has played with such notable musicians as Brightblack Morning Light, Prefuse 73, Vincent Gallo, and most recently Cat Power. Her music is an atmospheric, seductive, unconventional and ambient experience. It is used to break away from familiar forms, to defy what's been taught, and to challenge what is readily known. The result is hauntingly beautiful soundscapes. Expect your subconscious to be electroshocked by this unique talent.
