Description

Son Jarocho Music at the Albany Bulb

Outdoor performance, fandango style by Son de la Bahía Collective.

Sunday, April 29 from 12:00-2:00 pm

Presented by Love the Bulb

Be part of a community celebration featuring son jarocho music and dance at the Albany Bulb!

Son jarocho is regional folk music from Veracruz, Mexico. This tradition from the Gulf of Mexico, integrates music, dance and poetry using acoustic string-cord instruments, percussions and singing. The music is a fusion of African, Mexican indigenous, and Spanish musical elements. The themes of this music incorporate nature, love, joy, death, everyday life and community.

A fandango jarocho is a celebratory gathering that takes place around the tarima, a wooden platform on which women as a group or couples dance, using their tapping or zapateado as a percussive element of the music. People gather around the tarima along with musicians and dancers. The audience is part of this celebration and participation is welcome.

The San Francisco Bay Area has a vibrant community of son jarocho practitioners. This tradition that has been present in the cultural life of the Bay Area for about 30 years. As a result, there are formal groups as well as aficionados to this musical tradition. The Son de la Bahia collective includes a mix of members from around the Bay who love and live this tradition. We invite you to be part of this community jam! Bring your instruments, bring your dancing shoes and/or your willingness to connect with others through music and nature.

Let’s celebrate the many cultures of the Bay and the beauty of the unique waterfront park known as the Albany Bulb!

Here's a video of what son jarocho music is like.

Here's an article and a video about Fandago without Borders, an annual event that uses son jarocho to build bridges instead of walls.

About the Albany Bulb

The Albany Bulb is a magical almost-island about the size of Alcatraz connected to the East Bay mainland by a long, narrow neck of rubble. The Bulb was a construction debris landfill from 1963 to 1983, and after it closed, dogwalkers, birdwatchers, and artists took over this pile of concrete and rebar, which was never fully capped or manicured.

Over the years, artists have used the Bulb as a platform to continue the tradition of the driftwood art that once filled the Emeryville mudflats, building large sculptures both from flotsam and from materials pulled out of the landfill. Artists riff off each other's work over time and space, and visitors return to see what is new with their favorite pieces or what has popped up in a new location.
