Description

Curious to learn more about Solutions Journalism? Join us for the official Solutions Journalism Network training to explore the ins and outs of solutions journalism, talk about why it’s important, explain key steps in reporting a solutions story, and get loads of tips and resources for investigating what’s working.

We will also explore the recently revamped Solutions Story Tracker, a database of more than 5,000 stories tagged by beat, publication, author, location, and more, a virtual heat map of what's working around the world.

Attending the training makes you eligible to submit your stories to SJN`s Story Tracker and apply for SJN’s freelance travel grants!

This workshop will be co-led by Linda Shaw, Western Region manager for the Solutions Journalism Network and Sara Catania, SJN's director of journalism school partnerships. Linda previously served as editor of Education Lab, a Seattle Times project that provides in-depth reporting on promising practices in public schools. She has worked as a reporter and editor, mostly at The Seattle Times and mostly covering education. In 2008, she was named beat reporter of the year for large newspapers by the Education Writers Association. In 2016, she was part of a Seattle Times team that created the award-winning multimedia project on race called “Under Our Skin.”

Sara teaches journalism at the University of Southern California, serves on the program committee for Stanford's JSK Journalism Fellowship, where she was a fellow, and supports the Online News Association Women's Leadership Accelerator as a mentor and speaker. Her journalism experience includes digital leader and newsroom manager, grounded in years of reporting and editing at a wide range of news outlets including the Los Angeles Times, Reuters, Mother Jones, the LA Weekly and NBC.

Please make sure to reserve your spot!

The Solutions Journalism Network supports and connects journalists interested in doing solutions journalism, rigorous reporting about how people are responding to problems. Join our growing community of journalists. Our communities connect, support, and celebrate journalists interested in investigating and surfacing responses to social problems. From facilitating matchmaking between reporters and editors, to providing needed tools like story ideas, collaborators, and limited funding, we hope to increase the quality and quantity of solutions reporting in media across the world. Join our Los Angeles community for regular trainings and events!
