Description

Erin Cusanno, LMHC, has been a School Counselor for 20 years and has recently started a private practice as an LMHC. In her role as School Counselor, Erin has worked extensively with children and families facing a variety of learning and mental health struggles including Autism Spectrum Disorder, Anxiety, Depression, OCD, Eating Disorders, Bipolar Disorder. Erin has been trained in crisis response through the Trauma Illness and Grief Consortium in Monroe County. She has also engaged in Mindfulness training and regularly teaches mindfulness skills to her students. For the past year and a half, Erin has enthusiastically integrated Solution Focused Brief Therapy techniques into her work as a School Counselor and Private Practitioner. As this approach is brief and characterized by a focus on client strengths, resources, adaptive behaviors, and preferred future, it appeals to a wide range of children and families. She has also trained district staff (teachers, administrators, counselors and social workers) in how to utilize the principles of this approach in their work as educators.

This workshop is a combination of active learning experiences and discussions. Participants will learn questions which are characteristic of SFBT and how to incorporate these questions into their work as Mental Health Professionals: Preferred Future Questions, Scaling Questions, Coping Questions, Exception Questions. Participants will also practice affirming client strengths and identifying next small steps towards a preferred future. Participants will leave the workshop feeling energized, refreshed, and ready to take their next small step to incorporate these SF questions into their work in a way that is most useful for them.

Learning Objectives:

  1. In this workshop, participants will learn 4 types of Solution Focused Questions that can be used in their roles as mental health professionals.

  2. Following the workshop, participants will identify their next small steps to incorporate SF questions in their work as mental health professionals.

  3. Throughout the workshop, participants will practice SF questions with each other and will notice how they respond to SF questions in a way that increases hope and agency.

  4. Following the workshop, participants will be able to pivot from problem talk to solution building with clients.
