YOUSEEF ELIAS “In Case of Emergency”
The hospital social worker tells Youseef and his siblings that their mom is being kicked out of the stroke unit. What’s their care plan for an incapacitated 84-year-old woman? How the hell are they gonna figure it out on the fly when people are disinfecting their groceries and therapy is on Zoom? Oh yeah, don't forget about the lawyer, and mother of three young girls, he connected with on Hinge. Can this recently-divorced 50-something public defender provide emotional support for his dying mom while falling in love?
PEARL ONG “The Aunts”
It's Father's Day. My Dad and the Aunts are coming over for dessert. For the first time, I have a Gay Pride flag hanging proudly on my balcony. Should I take the flag down? Nah, I can't be bothered, they'll never notice. Anyway, we're a family that avoids uncomfortable topics.
KENNY YUN “Who You Gonna Call? Ghostbusters Grandma!"
Rain. Black dresses and suits. Kenny’s first funeral. Grandpa’s tombstone has an unknown name. No priest, no shaman. No ritual for Grandfather’s soul.
This memory haunts Kenny decades later. Now a clue to intergenerational ghosts. Who you gonna call?
BARBARA BRADY “Modess… because”
The Modess product designers might have been stuck in the Victorian age, but its marketing people were progressive. They came up with a groundbreaking ad campaign featuring glamour shots of gorgeous women and the slogan "Modess… because." Because there's this incredible social secret that's so widespread it affects half the population, and we don't talk about it… because.
