About this event

A Series for Frustrated Parents Based on Dr. Ross Greene's "The Explosive Child" and "Raising a Human Being"

In this three-session series, Rachel Sklar, MSW, Parent Educator at Parents Place, a program of JFCS' Center for Children and Youth, will bring Dr. Ross Greene's transformational parenting books alive for you. Explore triggers that leave you and your child frustrated and quick to anger. Learn a collaborative problem-solving approach, connect with other parents, and walk away feeling capable and confident. It is recommended, though not required, that participants read either The Explosive Child or Raising a Human Being by Dr. Ross Greene ahead of the series.

Fee: $115 for the series of 3 sessions, Wednesday, June 9, 16, and 23.

Session 1: Skill Building for Easily Frustrated Kids

Wednesday, June 9 from 12:30 – 2 pm (PDT)

Easily frustrated kids are often misunderstood. They have extraordinary potential but often require a different approach. In this session, we'll lean on Dr. Ross Greene's books The Explosive Child and Raising a Human Being to explore why some kids lack flexibility and can't tolerate frustration. Having this understanding alone can reveal a new, customized, and effective approach for your child. We'll look at ways to teach kids to improve executive functioning, language processing, emotional regulation, cognitive flexibility, and social skills. Parents will walk away with new ideas about how to help their child articulate concerns, consider possible solutions, and reflect on win-win scenarios.

Session 2: Collaborative Problem Solving Approaches for Frustrated Families

Wednesday, June 16 from 12:30 – 2 pm (PDT)

In Session 1 of this series, we talked about building skills that increase flexibility and frustration tolerance. In this session, we'll identify your child's biggest triggers and explore Dr. Ross Greene's three problem-solving approaches known as Plan A, B, and C. You'll map out a collaborative problem-solving approach for one of your child's recurring issues and create a record-keeping system to help you track and solve future problems. You'll learn how to handle frustration without using rewards and punishments, deescalate problems, and collaborate on win-win solutions while still setting clear limits.

Session 3: Anger management for Explosive Kids and Frustrated Parents

Wednesday, June 23 from 12:30 – 2 pm (PDT)

In sessions 1 and 2 of this series, we applied Dr. Ross Greene's collaborative problem-solving and skill-building strategies to kids who are easily frustrated. In this session, we'll celebrate your successes since the previous sessions and coach you through new challenges. We'll turn our attention toward automated anger reactions that often arise in the heat of the moment, and discuss ways to prioritize communication, validation, and collaboration.

Fee: $115 for the series of 3 sessions.

The Zoom link will be emailed 30 minutes before the workshop begins.

Please note, this workshop will NOT be recorded.
