Calling all kids aged 7 - teens! Run away with the circus without actually having to leave home!  Moody Street Circus founders Sacha and Melinda Melina Pavlata are hosting and teaching 4 weeks of circus sessions in their Waltham headquarters.  Each 1/2 day weekly session costs $350.

Moody Street Circus Class size is always deliberately kept low - to 10 kids per session, to maximize safety and ensure individual attention for all kids to learn circus tricks safely on all the equipment.  If your child has trouble following directions or listening to teachers in classes, please don't register them for this program!  Safety is paramount in the circus arts and respectfully listening to your teachers is integral to the highest quality experience for all involved.  If you have any questions whatsoever, please contact Melinda Pavlata at Moody Street Circus: 781 893 2491

If you are new to our program, we would like you to contact us by email (melinda@cirquepassion.com) before you register your child so we can find out a little more about them and make sure that 1) the classes are appropriate/a good fit for them and 2) there is room in the week you are choosing.

  • We start the day with a warm-up and fun stretching and strengthening exercises.
  • We proceed to circus tumbling skills on the tumbling mats, including forward rolls, monkey rolls, wheelbarrows, candlesticks, cartwheels and pyramid formation.
  • Throughout each session we introduce some of Sacha Pavlata's multi-generational circus family clowning skits, including Dead Man, Robin Hood the Coin comedy act, the Newspaper and more. KIds can practice their circus theatrics and comedy.
  • When time permits we will be screening some great circus acts from our private collection.
  • We break into small groups for safe, assisted learning on the aerial equipment.
  • Students learn and practice at their own pace.
  • Students have practice time on rola bola, rolling globe, low wire, plate spinning, juggling, trampoline.
  • We end the day perfecting skills on the mini-trampoline.
  • We will provide fresh fruit and bagel with cream cheese snacks daily. Please let us know if your child has any allergies or other medical issues.

Program days will begin at 9 a.m. and end at 12:30 p.m.  Students can be dropped off at 8:45 a.m.  Campers must be picked up and signed for on time at 12:30 by their parents or care-givers.  Parents are allowed to stay and observe the the program and their kids in action at any time - hang out on our comfy futons and watch what your kids are learning from the sidelines.

Attire:  Moody Street Circus is a gum-free, street-shoe free zone.  We ask that even parents who are dropping off and picking up their children remove their shoes before coming into the studio space.  Students will work barefoot, but indoor-use only sneakers and/or acrobatic shoes are suggested for work on unicycle and low wire.  Long hair must be worn pulled back in a pony-tail or in braids. No jewelry or zippers on the equipment.  We go upside-down on equipment and always follow the SAFETY FIRST! Rule, so: Leotards and shorts or leggings for girls, shorts and shirts that can be well-tucked in for boys.  Campers should not be worried about tucking in their shirts when they are upside down, it is very distracting and dangerous when you are learning new tricks to be worried about your clothing.

Waiver forms MUST be completed for each camper or participation in the program will not be allowed.

Call Melinda at 781 893 2491 or email her (melinda [at] cirquepassion [dot] com) with any questions. This signed form is required prior to participation in any physical activity at Moody Street Circus studio.

Melina of Daughters of Rhea / Moody Street Circus

Moody Street Circus studio is the private family-run studio of professional circus performers Melina and Sacha Pavlata.

At Moody Street Circus we teach the joy of life through small-group circus arts and belly dance lessons to children, teens and adults of all ages. Heart, humor and inclusive community spirit are at the core of our teaching.  Women of all ages and ability delight in our empowering belly dance classes and we encourage our circus students to try everything while understanding everyone is at a different level of ability.  We celebrate students' strengths, inspire and  challenge them to continuously grow.  Beyond skills, we pay attention to elegant transitions and artistic self-expression.

Moody Street Circus Directors Sacha and Melinda (AKA Melina of Daughters of Rhea) share extraordinary family legacies in circus and dance.

Alexandre Sacha Pavlata is a fifth-generation Czech circus artist, aerialist and world-renown circus arts teacher.  He has performed in many major European circuses since he was a child.  Sacha's circus teaching career spans over 4 decades, starting with the Ecole Nationale de Cirque in France.  He was brought to the U.S. by the the Big Apple Circus in the 1980s.  There he was tentmaster and aerial star on cloud swing.  He also directed the Big Apple Circus' School of Circus Arts.  Sacha trained the stars of Broadway's Barnum and appeared in the major motion pictures Big Top Pee Wee and Annie. Sacha cofounded Circus Flora in St Louis and was master teacher for Circus Flora's Circus Arts School as well as at St Louis's prestigious Center of Creative Arts and Sacha's own School of Circus Arts in Missouri. Sacha's attention to safety in circus rigging is well-known in the circus world. Sacha created an unmatched double cloudswing act with Aurelia Wallenda-Zoppe that consistently inspired standing ovations in Circus Flora in the 1990s.

Sacha grew up with his traveling circus family in a wooden circus wagon which crisscrossed Europe and North Africa presenting their famous unicycle and trampoline act under big tops all over the globe. From horses to high wire and everything in between, Sacha has since performed nearly every kind of circus act you could imagine, including touring with the legendary Flying Wallendas as an integral part of their breath-taking seven-person pyramid on the high wire.  Sacha was an integral member of the Flying Wallenda team that won Monte Carlo's coveted Silver Clown at the International Circus Festival.

Sacha's circus heritage goes back 5 generations on both sides.  His mother, Hungarian-born Anna Dubsky, came from a long line of Risley Act performers (the acrobatic foot juggling of people), and his father, Czech-born Karl Pavlata, descended from a family of aerialists known for their great physical strength and versatility in the air.

Melinda "Melina" Pavlata, Ph.D. (AKA Melina of Daughters of Rhea) is a 2nd generation circus and belly dance artist. She grew up in the circus and dance worlds performing professionally as a child with her family, then ran away from the circus for a while to get her doctorate in medieval French literature.  After a successful stint teaching at the University of Pennsylvania and Boston College she cartwheeled right back to the circus!

Melinda was a child acrobat in San Francisco's Pickle Family Circus where her father was the songwriter and bandleader.  She danced alongside her mother Rhea and sister Piper on taverna stages in the ancient city of Athens, Greece.  She met Sacha while performing on Circus Flora and after many years touring together with their trapeze duet they settled in Waltham, MA and founded Moody Street Circus. (That's the short story, of course!)

As an adult Melinda has toured around the world as an aerialist, juggler, acrobat and belly dancer.  She has danced with horses and elephants and performed on trapeze and lyra with Circus Flora, The Wallenda Family Circus, Cirque Rocks in New Zealand, Amazing Grace Circus in Nyack, NY, Cirque Passion and Moody Street Circus.   She has been featured in the documentary Run Away Circus as well as So Much, So Fast.

Melina is also on the faculty of Kripalu where she teaches an annual 5-day retreat "Wild Hips, Gypsy Heart: Belly Dance as Self-Empowerment.
