Description
Global Warming and Human Migration
Key dynamics and policy choices
Speaker: David Wrathall, Assistant Professor, College of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences
In every region of the planet, there is evidence that climate change is motivating patterns of human migration. As the climate continues to shift, millions of people will need to migrate from vulnerable areas to safer areas.
The key migration dynamics that unfold under climate change scenarios — the timing of future migrations, likely destinations, and the volume and condition of migrants — are largely dependent on the policy choices that we make today.
In this discussion, Professor Wrathall, geographer and lead author with the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), will share his insights as to how we might mitigate the negative impact on people who will inevitably migrate as a result of climate change.
