Event description
Jump into the vast and exciting world of metal fabrication with this introductory class with a project you can take home!

About this Event

*This class will meet 11/8 from 5:30-7:30, and 11/9 from 9am to 4pm*

About the Class

This class, hosted by Twin Cities Maker, focuses on an easy and accessible introduction to metal fabrication. The goal of this class is to become more comfortable and knowledgeable with a variety of fabrication tools and to walk away with a completed project. For this fabrication class we will be making a small coffee table that measures about 1.5'x3' with a wood top.

This class will cover welding, creating and using jigs, metal patinas, troubleshooting projects, creating and reading blueprints, using wood in metal projects, and use of tools such as the drill press, bandsaw, ironworker, chop saw, angle grinders, and hand drills.

The fee for this class includes all the materials, instructor time, and an additional 30% of the profits to be put towards buying an actual metal fabrication table for the metal shop!!! Your participation does a lot for this effort and we hope to be in a position to start looking for one in the next 6 months to a year (they are very expensive)!

What to Expect

This class is longer and across two days. Learning and fabricating together will take time and we want to ensure you're able to take home your project. On Friday we'll spend a couple hours meeting and preparing our work pieces, reviewing what we'll be doing, going over tools, and setting-up our space. On Saturday we'll meet early, have a half-hour break for lunch, and end around 4. If projects are still not completed by then, the instructor can stay later or meet the next day.

Metal, wood, and fasteners will be provided. Metal coupons will be available for folks to practice their welding skills with and participants will be able to choose their welding process (either TIG or MIG). Twin Cities Maker will have personal safety gear available (welding helmets, gloves, and safety glasses), however it's recommended if you have smaller hands to bring your own gloves.

Physical Space

The floors are concrete (going to be harder on joints) and there is seating available. If you have knee-pads, please bring them. There may be parts of our fabrication process that will require being on the floor for those whose bodies can work with that a little more.

There is water , a soda machine, and one bathroom. There are six stairs; three to get to the main door and three more to step-up into the larger shop area. If you need additional accessibility information or support, please reach out to the instructor. There is also often loud noises and dust; if you have sensitive lungs please bring a respirator! There will be earplugs as well.

About the Instructor

Cory Gabrielle is a queer welder using they/them pronouns who loves meeting new folks and swapping stories, knowledge, and laughs. Cory works as a professional welder at a small production and fabrication welding shop in Seward and takes on smaller fabrication projects for companies and individuals. They've been welding for over three years and have a two-year degree in Welding Technology and an HVAC degree in progress. They love TIG welding and primarily do TIG welding on stainless and mild steel at work and on projects, even when it's not the faster option! You can reach Cory through the Hack Factory metal shop email for questions.
